Robert Pattinson es el nuevo ídolo de las adolescentes de medio mundo. Su papel del inmortal Edward en la saga Crepúsculo ha hecho que los vampiros vuelvan a tener tantas admiradoras como hace quince años, cuando millones de fans suspiraban por Tom Cruise y Brad Pitt en Entrevista con el vampiro. Robert, de 23 años, nos cuenta sus secretos en esta entrevista.
Robert, ¿qué escena de “Luna nueva” te dejó mejor recuerdo?
Supongo que fue en Italia, en la escena donde tengo que salir a la luz del día. Había demasiados extras, muchos fans de “Crepúsculo” que habían viajado hasta el lugar sólo para vernos.
¿Por qué fue tan importante?
Sentí muchísima responsabilidad al estar frente a tanta gente obsesionada con esta historia. Fue un momento de nervios y también la toma donde más cerca sentí al personaje.
"SOY TAN POSESIVO COMO EDWARD"
¿Y la escena donde tu personaje decide dejar a Bella?
Fue muy extraño pero ayudaron los admiradores de la serie. Para ellos, la relación entre Bella y Edward es ideal. Y se siente el peso de esa presión.
¿Hay algo algo en común entre tu personalidad y la de Edward?
Supongo que, para ciertas cosas, también soy cabezota. A veces, me obsesiono y soy muy posesivo.
¿Qué te obsesiona?
Hmm....
¿Tu privacidad?
En cierta forma (riendo). ¿En qué soy tan obsesivo? Tengo ideas muy específicas sobre lo que quiero de mi trabajo y cómo me gusta que me perciban. No le presto atención a nadie y por eso no tengo publicista. No podría soportar a alguien tratando de decirme que haga algo concreto. Soy muy meticuloso y un maniático que quiere controlarlo todo.
¿Te has acostumbrado ya al fenómeno “Crepúsculo”?
Todavía lucho contra ciertas cosas aunque ya estoy más tranquilo. En sí, el rodaje no me da miedo porque me encanta la gente con la que trabajo y tengo pocos desacuerdos con el guión.
¿Te gusta que tus admiradoras quieran conocerte más allá del personaje de Edward?
Yo pienso que eso se logra con el trabajo. Las entrevistas me parecen arriesgadas porque nadie es especialmente tan interesante. Pero también tiene que ver con el hecho de que realmente no sé quién soy. Tampoco quiero ser ningún personaje de la sociedad.
"ES GRACIOSO SI SE ME ACERCAN ADULTOS"
¿Cuál es la experiencia más extraña que has tenido con una fan?
Hay tantas..., aunque últimamente menos porque hay más seguridad. Siempre es gracioso cuando se me acercan los adultos. Un día se me acercó una mujer de unos 90 años. Es muy inusual pero dicen lo mismo que las chicas de doce (ríe).
¿Tu estilo de vida ha cambiado mucho? ¿Cómo te sientes cuando te alejas del estudio de cine para afrontar la verdadera realidad?
Ése es el problema. Todavía no salgo del estudio de cine. Desde el 14 de enero ya pasé por tres estudios distintos. Sólo tuve tres días de descanso. Por eso no puedo decirte si realmente cambió mi vida porque sigo dentro de un estudio y voy a seguir así hasta el año que viene. Al menos, siento que sigo siendo exactamente el mismo... y a lo mejor no es algo bueno.

¿Profesionalmente tampoco has sentido que tu carrera haya cambiado gracias a “Crepúsculo”?
No lo sé. He hecho una película fuera de esta serie. Se llama “Remember Me” y se estrena el próximo año. Pero sí hay diferencia porque me ofrecen trabajos que jamás hubiera soñado. Pero también da miedo, porque ya no tengo que pasar por pruebas de casting y tampoco quiero hacer una película sólo por el hecho de hacer cine.
¿Te da miedo esta situación?
En cierta forma, la situación da pánico y me cuestiono mucho más que antes. Antes de “Crepúsculo” aceptaba cualquier trabajo que conseguía. Pero ahora, cuando ven una película como ésta, esperan una buena actuación y un éxito económico. Es algo muy difícil y da miedo.
¿No es lo que uno sueña cuando estás empezando en esta profesión?
Sí. Uno siempre piensa en cuándo hará una superproducción porque, sin una buena película detrás, no te dan los papeles que buscas. Y después, con una película como ésta, donde el público es tan específico, empiezan a decirte cómo llegar al público. Por eso, también hay ciertas limitaciones. Cuando nadie ve tus películas, te puedes dar el lujo de hacer lo que quieras. Hay puntos buenos y malos en los dos casos.
¿Te preocupa que, dentro de un tiempo, se borre el éxito que ahora estás viviendo después de protagonizar la saga “Crepúsculo”?
Estoy trabajando tanto que casi estoy viviendo en una realidad alternativa. Los horarios de rodaje son tan largos e interminables que parezco un médico. Y los doctores con los que hablo de esto me dicen lo mismo al respecto. Es como si no supieras lo que pasa fuera del trabajo, porque además esta situación te aleja de tu familia y de tus amigos.
El amor es el gran protagonista de la saga “Crepúsculo”. ¿Cómo evitas enamorarte en la vida real tanto como lo haces en la ficción?
Simple. Tengo que acordarme siempre de que me pagan por lo que hago (ríe). Y con eso hay también muchas otras connotaciones. Ésa es una de las grandes separaciones.
"YO NO SOY MUY ROMÁNTICO"
¿Crees que eres una persona muy romántica?
No tengo demasiadas anécdotas románticas en mi vida. La gente me insiste en que deberíamos agregar más acción para que los hombres también vean este tipo de películas, pero yo realmente no soy muy romántico. Es ridículo.
¿Por qué piensas eso?
Cuando vi la película “Titanic” tampoco pensé que fuera una película sólo para mujeres. ¿Te cuento algo romántico que hice? Una vez, le escondí un ramo flores a alguien y ella pensó que había sido otra persona y el otro tipo dijo que había sido él, así que la jugada me salió genial (no puede parar de reír recordando).
¿Alguna vez te rompieron el corazón como cuando Edward deja a Bella en “Luna nueva”?
(Se toma su tiempo). Trato de pensar alguna estúpida respuesta... pero no (riendo). No se me ocurre ninguna respuesta que darte. No, no creo que me hayan roto el corazón.

What scene in New Moon left a nice memory to you?
Probably the Volterra scene, where I have to step into the light. There were many extras and many fans there. Some fans traveled across the world to be there.
Why was it so important?
I felt a huge sense of responsability, being in front of so many that are so obsessed with this story. It was nevre wrecking, but I never felt closer to the character before this.
What about the scene where your character leaves Bella?
It was strange, but the fans helped.To them, Bella and Edward’s relationship is ideal. You can feel the weight of the pressure.
Is there anything you have in common with Edward?
I guess. Sometimes I can be very dumb too. And I’m very possessive and obsessive like him.
What are you obsessed about?
Um…
Your privacy?
In a way, yes (laughs). How am I obsessive? I guess I have very specific ideas as how I want my job to be, and how I want to be seen. I don’t pay attention to anyone, and I don’t have a publicist for that reason. I can’t stand the idea of someone telling me what to do. I’m very meticulous, and I want to be able to control everything on my own.
Have you gotten used to the Twilight phenomenon yet?
I’m still struggling, but I’m also more calm now. Filming is now scary, because I love the people I work with and I rarely have a problem with the script.
Do you like that your fans want to know more about you?
I think the best way to do that is through my work. Interviews are a risky thing because nobody is that interesting. But it’s also the fact that I still don’t know who I am. I don’t want to be just a character in society.
What’s the weirdest experience you’ve had with a fan?
There’s so many to tell, though now there’s fewer experiences because we have security now. One day a 90 year old woman came up to me, and it’s funny because she said the same things that 12 year olds say to me (laughs),
Has your life style changed a lot? How do you feel when you finally have the chance to leave the studio and live real life?
That is the problem. I never leave the set. Since January 14th I’ve been to thre different movie sets. I only had 3 days off. I can’t really say if my life has changed that much because I’m still inside a studio, and I will be next year too. But I feel like I’m the same person. Don’t know if that’s a good thing.
And have you felt any changes in your career since Twilight?
I don’t know yet. I did a new movie that comes out next year (RM) and I’ve been offered jobs that used to only dream about. But it’s scary. I don’t have to audition anymore, but I don’t want to be in movies just for the sake of it.
Is it really scary?
Yes. You always wonder if you’ll be part of a super production, because without a movie like this, you won’t find a the jobs that you’re looking for. And then after making a movie like that, that has a very specific audience, people want to tell you how to reach the audience from then on. Thanks to that, there’s a lot of limitations. When nobody watches your movies, you have the luxury of doing whatever you want. There’s pros and cons in both sides of the situation.
Are you afraid that the success you have now thanks to Twilight will fade one day?
I’m working so much that it’s like I’m living in an alternate reality. The shooting schedules are so long that I feel like I’m a doctor. And the doctors I talk to about this say the same thing. It’s like you don’t know what’s going on outside of work because it keeps you away from your family and friends.
Love is the main subject in this movie. How do you not fall in love as much as you do in film?
Easy. I have to remind myself I get paid to do this (laughs). And with that, there’s plenty of other connotations. That’s one of the main differences.
Are you a very romantic person?
When I saw the movie Titanic I didn’t think it was a movie just for women. The only romantic thing I ever did was hide flowers for a girl, she thought it was anither guy and he didn’t correct her, so that didn’t turn out very good for me (he can’t stop laughing now).
Have you ever had your heart broken like Bella?
(he takes him time) I’m trying to think of a stupid response, but no (laughs). I can’t think of anything. No, I haven’t had my heart broken.
